Why Being Witnessed Changes Behavior
Why do we find it easier to keep promises to other people than the ones we make to ourselves?

Whether it's starting a business, changing careers, getting healthier, writing a book, or organizing your finances, there's a tendency to believe we need a complete plan before taking action.
We tell ourselves we'll start once we've figured everything out.
The irony is that most meaningful goals don't work that way.
You rarely discover the entire path before you begin walking it.
When we look at someone who's achieved something impressive, it's easy to imagine they had a detailed blueprint from day one.
In reality, most people simply kept answering the same question over and over again:
"What's the next thing I need to do?"
That question feels much less intimidating than asking how you'll accomplish the entire goal.
It also keeps your attention where it belongs: on the part you can actually influence today.
One person was trying to balance a full-time job while growing two businesses. Another was navigating a new job while preparing for a move. On the surface, their situations couldn't have looked more different.
Yet the conversation kept leading to the same place.
Neither person needed a more ambitious plan.
Neither needed to work harder.
What helped most was identifying the next meaningful action they could realistically take before the following week.
Once that became clear, the larger goal felt manageable again.
It's tempting to believe progress comes from making one huge leap.
More often, it comes from making one good decision today, followed by another tomorrow.
Small actions have a way of creating clarity.
Clarity creates confidence.
Confidence makes the next decision easier.
Before long, what once felt overwhelming starts to feel possible.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by something important, don't ask yourself how you're going to accomplish the entire goal.
Instead, ask:
What's the next meaningful step I can take this week?
You may find that's all you need to start moving again.
